Make Climate Pollution Relevant Again
Before November.
As the US heads towards it midterms, the US News publishers need to make sure this message gets through to its population:
The current El Niño weather pattern in the Pacific Ocean is developing at a rate way beyond the prediction of experts, and in a way that could lead to Pacific temperature rises of 4 degrees Celsius, or 7 degrees Fahrenheit above normal this coming year. And that this will likely cause catastrophic bleaching of carol reefs across and further diminish the resilience of ice sheets including the Thwaites (West Antarctic 'Doomsday' glacier).
Scientists believe El Niño weakens the coastal easterly and shelf-edge winds off West Antarctica via atmospheric teleconnections. Further, that his reduction in surface wind stress limits cold on-shelf surface flow and draws deeper, warmer Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) onto the continental shelf beneath the ice shelves, increasing melting around the Thwaites Ice Sheet.
Its bad.
So, if this soon to be record smashing El Niño will even potentially have record smashing consequences, the good people in the USA should know it before they vote, especially when one of the choices they have is someone who , um , does not read or listen to the science...
