The result is increasingly intense heatwaves, a persistently warm ocean, and growing risks for people, ecosystems and infrastructure across Europe and beyond.” Samantha Burgess, Strategic Lead for Climate at ECMWF The experts also tell us that: The last time global ocean temperatures were consistently as warm as they are right now was roughly 125,000 years ago, during a historical timeframe known as the Last Interglacial period. Global average sea surface temperatures during the peak of the Last Interglacial period (roughly 129,000 to 116,000 years ago) were essentially indistinguishable from modern averages. Even though the temperatures were similar, sea levels during that ancient warm period were 6 to 9 metres (20 to 30 feet) higher than they are today. Sea levels were much higher back then because the planet's massive ice sheets had thousands of years to melt and respond to the heat. Today's oceans are warming at an incredibly accelerated rate, and sea levels are still trailing behind the sudden spike in temperature. The temperature is still rising fast.
