Tourism travel levy
Following on from last week's idea that
"For every $1 spent on fossil-fuel derived energy use, $0.01 is automatically diverted into a global climate fund."
I vote this be increased to 20% for tourism travel.
AI estimates we spend over US$1.4 trillion on tourism travel each year. Like all things, the highest percentage is spent by the wealthier people.
Compared to a global lockdown which we did for Covid, a 20% levy on tourism travel tickets would enable everyone to live semi-normal lives while we clean up the world and give ourselves a chance, at least, to avert an even bigger crisis: global biodiversity loss and climate catastrophe.
It will be slightly unfair on some businesses but less impactful than Covid by 80%, and gives future generations - our children - a chance of a much better future.
