How to fix the Oscars

Yes, the Oscars does need fixing, and here is why. Now more than ever, the film viewing public is spoiled for choices. The number of films being made is burgeoning in line with the technology to produce them. Some brilliant little known films can easily be lost in the crowd. As the number of films has grown, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - the organization that hosts the Oscars - has maintained a club like atmosphere in distributing the awards, with the average nominations for a big budget film that is given the green light by the Academy racking up maybe 10 nominations, and winning maybe 4-6 awards, with lesser budget films getting zero mention. While some of the big winners might be deserving, the public are aware that the big studios Studios spend millions of dollars (estimated $3 million to $15 million+ per film) to lobby Academy members. And as the content 'out there ' grows and grows, the 'clubbiness' feel of the Academy is growing also. Further, the public are losing an opportunity to be told about other good films that have been made in the past year. The more genuinely eligible new movies there are being made, the more the 'half dozen to the best' system actually denies us the information we want, which is help to identify films worth watching. And the more it is that the current system looks like bribery and not bona fide artistic judgment. So, my message to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is that you need to fix this.
