This is a bit of a generalization, but average income earners pay around the same proportion of their income to tax as the super rich. On paper the very very wealthy should pay a bit more, but in reality, with their highly paid tax advisors, they pay a bit less. This is great for the super wealthy, as the majority of their wealth is made by money itself. After a certain point, they do not need to lift a finger to just keep getting wealthier and wealthier. So much money therefore goes to their luxury consumption, rather than community-improving projects. If only the super wealthy paid more tax. Right? So why don't governments require it? The answer is two fold: The super rich donate to the politicians to help them stay in power, and so governments are very often beholden to them; and The super rich own the media, and therefore control the narrative about tax - which they have successfully managed to maintain - which is that 'tax' is a dirty word. So maybe people need to educate themselves, and give governments who are brave enough to raise tax as an agenda item a fair hearing? Tax is not a dirty word as you have been taught to believe. You will always hear impressive arguments about why the rich should not be taxed more. They will receive plenty of air time. Of course the super rich should be taxed more, dummies. Tax the super rich!
