The United Nations Charter gives absolute power of veto over any action of the UN to a small handful of countries - basically the winners of the second world war. This system has screwed up the world, as there is virtually zero UN response to any geopolitical event, as one country or another of that cohort will vote against strong action on anything, for one selfish reason or another. Europe needs to lead the way to changing this truly screwed up system of global governance, immediately when Trump finishes up. The free world is dying at the hands of tyrants, technocrats and climate catastrophe if the UN continues to operate as a lame duck. Europe needs to lead an impassioned pitch to the huge majority of nation states that are disadvantaged by this system (in fact, everyone is) for a change to the UN Charter as soon as Trump is gone. A properly prosecuted argument for this not capable of counter argument by the incumbent permanent members. The argument just needs to be made and pressed by the EU, in particular high GDP countries like Germany, and also India, Brazil and the African Union. Right now, it is highly likely that the likes of Russia will be wooing India with promised support for it having a permanent membership on the Security Council, thus creating a policy debt. This will only further entrench the current corrupt system. Right minded governments need to prepare now and act soon.
