Dangers of chatbot therapy

More people are turning towards the in internet for mental health support. In particular more people are turning to "chatbot therapy" instead of qualified professionals. There are some benefits of course - low cost and immediate accessibility. But this is problematic when chatbots are designed to agree with the user and can lead to the chatbot reinforcing damaging behaviours. True therapy requires nuanced understanding and ethical responsibility. It is more important than ever to ensure everyone who needs it can access professional mental health support, through free sessions, subsidies, and awareness and information. Then, as it should be, AI can be used as a support and not a substitute.
