In 500 years from now, people will look back at this period of, say, 1950 to 2050, as 'The Great Acceleration'. The Great Acceleration, they will say, was the period when the population of the world quadrupled in a short amount of time, unleashing ecological devastation that will last millennia. They will not remember your name - and you will not be personally shamed, no need to worry about that - but they will lament that the educated people of the world during the last quarter of that period knew the consequences of their actions and had the power to stop it, but still did not act. In my opinion, anyone who is educated enough to know that rampant consumerism is damaging to the planet during this period of time (2025-2050) and still engages in it, is morally culpable for the ruination of the planet for future generations. The good news? The good news is that your moral culpability can end right here. Minimise fossil fuel use, support politicians and companies with environmental credentials. Yes? Good. Your job is done.
