AIs first and most important task

The IEA says that power consumption from data centres is growing rapidly with the advent of AI: "From 2024 to 2030, data centre electricity consumption grows by around 15% per year, more than four times faster than the growth of total electricity consumption from all other sectors. However, in the wider context, a 3% share in 2030 means that data centre share in global electricity demand remains limited. Global electricity consumption for data centres is projected to double to reach around 945 TWh by 2030 in the Base Case, representing just under 3% of total global electricity consumption in 2030. " It can be seen that in a short amount of time, AI's proportion of responsibility for global greenhouse emissions could be around the same as that of all airlines and air travel in the world, each year. AI's first and most important task is to figure out how it and all other emitters can most efficiently reduce their consumption of fossil fuels. If it can do that, then as far as I am concerned, it can use as much power as it likes.
