How to improve global governance
So many governments in the world now invite constituents to submit ideas for their parliamentary agenda thorough the effective use of the internet.
This idea is that the UN should do the same, when setting the agenda for the General Assembly.
Because we are all global citizens, right?
How is the agenda for the annual September meeting of the UN General Assembly currently put together?
1. Secretary-General's Role:
The Secretary-General prepares a provisional agenda, drawing from various sources, including reports from other UN organs, items proposed by member states, and matters related to the organization's work. This provisional agenda is circulated to member states at least 60 days before the session begins.
2. General Committee's Role:
The General Committee, composed of the President and Vice-Presidents of the General Assembly and the Chairpersons of the Main Committees, reviews the provisional agenda. It then makes recommendations to the General Assembly on which items to include in the final agenda and how they should be allocated to the plenary or the Main Committees. The committee may also decide not to recommend certain items from the provisional agenda.
3. General Assembly's Role:
The General Assembly, in a plenary meeting, adopts the final agenda based on the recommendations of the General Committee. This adoption usually happens at the beginning of the session. The agenda is a crucial document that outlines the topics that will be discussed and acted upon during the session.
Item 124 this year is
124. Strengthening of the United Nations system.
It won't get much attention because it sis so far down the list of things to do.
Maybe we as a world should be more focussed on this.
Let's get people talking about how to improve the UN system.
