OVERCOMING ENGLISH SPELLING
I propose to overcome the MAJOR problem of English Orthography (spelling using the Latin Alphabet) for both native reader/writers and 2nd language students.
I propose Pitman Shorthand be adapted for a digital age PRIMARILY for fast reading as opposed to fast writing .
Pitman's phonetic graphemes occupy less than half the space of the Latin alphabet at a comparative point size, with distinct ihdividual symbols for every English consonsant sound.
The International Phonetic Alphabet is long and probably far too complex for most people to learn as it deals with the vast complexities of ORAL speech across ALL languages.
Pitman Consonant Symbols form a brief easily learned writing system specifically for English, which I believe all could learn far more easily than dealing with the inconsistency of English spelliing . (T- line shorthand is equally inconsistent between spelling and phonetics, so no-one should confuse it with the purity of Pitman.)
This idea is not about shorthand writing, but the phonetic reading of simple to read and write (by hand or print on paper or on-screen) the basic meanings of words from the sound of consonants without interference from complex oral inflections of speech or historic spelling.
As the aim would NOT be fast handwriting, all diacritical vowell sounds could be INCLUDED, when transcribed digitally, and most shortforms EXCLUDED, thus making all phonemes 100% phonetic. This would do away with ALL SPELLING PROBLEMS, making it it far easier to teach English native speakers and 2nd language students. Sadly, I imagine it would not benefit dyslexics, but , hopefully, they should not be worse off.
Its appearance might help endear it to millions of writers of arabic and Indian sub-continent languages, although it is read left to right.
It would require prior research and pilot studies by teachers and linguists to determine the best way forward. Like my proposal for a UNIVERSAL SIGN LANGUAGE, I believe it requires international agreement to develop the idea WITHOUT ANY competetive element or deadline, ensuring that the BEST POSSIBLE system is produced.
