Digital Voting by 2030
The current shades of democracy adopted in nations such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Germany were born out of the idea of fairness and equality. In an ideal world these democratic systems would be both 100% fair and ensure 100% voting equality. However, they don't. The problem with the democratic systems we now function with is that they date back hundreds of year and have changed very little. The earliest democracy were designed so that a select few, elected by the population, would make decisions that they believed would benefit the population. The reason that every didn't simply tell the government what they thought was because it was both expensive and extremely time-consuming. These days that isn't the case. An elected government could simply set-up a website where people vote on the pressing issues, after being given EVERY piece of evidence and information that the government has on said issue. This eliminates the problem of short-termism and disables government officials from making any decision that acts only the interest of themselves. Of course I concede there are several barriers stopping such a system being implemented, this is why I suggest that major government ensure that ALL citizens gain the basic IT and literacy skills need to do perform the simple tasks of entering some personal information in to a computer, reading through some data and casting a vote. Taking into account the current economic crisis hitting much of the developed world, I would suggest that schemes to get such a democratic system in place would start around 2020, with the first digital public voting being made between 2025 and 2030.
