My idea is that there 'should' only be three reasons for putting people in jail: deterring others, protecting society, and enabling rehabilitation. Retribution doesn't have a place in this list anymore. People who read, observe and think know that even the craziest acts are borne out of nature and nurture. It is not for humans to judge the extent of the moral failings of others.
