An average tree might last 30 or 100 years, sucking in CO2 and expelling oxygen, before dying and giving back its carbon to the atmosphere. That happens to be the window in which urgent action of some kind is required - this lacuna while we wean off fossil fuels. Estimates are we might need to plant a trillion trees to make a big difference. So... we better get started.
