organisation and cooperation

After going to an overseas festival recently I had 2 sleeping bags I wanted to donate to a shelter. It took 30 mins on public transport to do so - it would have been easier to not donate them! Which made me think, how many good deeds don’t get done because of the hassle of doing them. If this festival was coupled with an organisation that could make use of the leftover gear, I’m sure a lot more of it would be donated and go to a good cause. I think this applies well beyond this specific scenario and as a society we need to work together and be organised to make helping each other easier. Maybe there could be goods exchanges in every suburb; or maybe councils could have monthly donate pick ups or, say, regular street pick ups and depots for second hand gear, as I am sure we all have things that we don't use that we would put out for someone else to use, if it was that easy. Aside from helping the less well off, the savings to the environment would be huge, particularly in reducing the production and shipping of cheap stuff we already have in our communities. Another thought is when we do a trip to the op shop to donate some things we don’t need we could also ask our neighbours a couple of days in advance, is there anything you would like me to take from your place to donate as well?
