no more to dumbing ourselves down

'We are right, they are wrong'. It is nice to feel part of an in-group that says that. It appeals to our tribal nature. It gives security, comfort. But in fact everyone's opinion on any matter is informed by variables beyond our comprehension and so, comforting as it might be, listening to people who appeal to our sense of belonging by using the 'us being right' and 'they being wrong' can only work against us. An educated population acknowledges tension between ones own 'in group' (s) and the wishes of others. In a big wide world, our biases toward tribalism are usually not based in common sense. The things that affect us from afar are huge, and we need to work with others outside our immediate groups, not against them. Only when we accept wise leaders will we achieve outcomes that are in our interest. We all need to fight against those who cajole us to see the world only through the lens of our tribal and cultural biases. This way of politics is against all our all our interests.
