While kids at school learn the fundamentals of science, like chemistry and physics, it's important to push to give this science context as well, importantly starting from the very young years. They might not be equipped to understand the nitty gritty of these subjects, but if we teach them the big picture early, and let them apply their understanding to real world problems, they will probably grow up particularly conscious of the environmental impacts of different things we do in day to day life. This will foster more sustainable habits early. Who knows - they could even go home and teach their parents a thing or two about helping the world out!
