Maintaining the Commons

"The first man who, having fenced in a piece of land, said 'This is mine', and found people naïve enough to believe him, that man was the true founder of civil society. From how many crimes, wars, and murders, from how many horrors and misfortunes might not any one have saved mankind, by pulling up the stakes, or filling up the ditch, and crying to his fellows: Beware of listening to this impostor; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody." — Rousseau 1754 Fast forward nearly three hundred years and you can add climate change to the horrors and misfortunes visited on us by greed. His commentary is of course an oversimplification, as is the opposite truism to his point, which is that Greed is Good. Now, we are born into what the world has given us, no matter who said what. I say , though, it is our job as custodians to maintain what is left of the commons, and in the case of 2024, to do whatever it takes to prevent the unfolding tragedy that is the decimation our commons, of the global ecosystems, that is occurring now. This is your job and mine, right now.
