Recent studies show that animals take evasive action to avoid being harmed. Therefore they probably feel pain. This is a fair summary of a lot of scientific articles on animal sentience. Its probably time we all just stopped using words and acknowledge we are animals, they are animals, and so we should assume they feel pain and distress just like we do. They just do.
