Carrington event around the corner?
I posted an idea a few weeks ago about the need to be able to survive without the internet:
"Don't rely on internet for everything
There are lots of good reasons to make sure you have a survival plan in case the internet goes down:
1. an artificial intelligence bot could one day bring down the lot
2. quantum cryptography may allow hackers to break the system of secure passwords
3. there could easy be another Carrington event, or who is to say there wont be a larger solar flare - that could knock our all throe satellites on which we rely to bring us the internet
4. we should know how to live without the internet anyway, as its arguably healthier to live without relying on it
How do you do that? I don't know. I am just saying its probably a good idea not to become too reliant on it. That's all."
Since I posted that idea just a few weeks ago, there was a solar flare that affected communications in the Americas, and I see thy have brought forward the next estimated period of intense solar activity from November 2024 - 2026 to now commence in January 2024.
My point, above, that we should not proceed on the assumption that solar flares are limited by the size of the Carrington Event, stands. There are no rules that say we could not be subject to something much bigger any day.
It will be good for us to learn to live without the internet as practice for that day, anyway. :)
