If we had started to seriously reduce fossil fuel use when the scientists first warned us, we wouldn't be in this predicament now. As it is, the emissions graph we have to make is not a gradual reduction over time. We need the graph to look like a cliff - we need to do it for the future of humankind and all other species with whom we share this planet. I don't want to be the one to say it, but, we know what we need to do: rip off that bandaid. Yes. We need to agree that we all need to stay home and live in covid type hermitage except for essential workers and essential travel and just wait while the power grids of the world are turned renewable and our transport vehicle manufacturing pipelines produce electric or other green vehicles. When that is done, we can come out of our shells.
