War Education

A recent trip to Vietnam reminded me of the horrific corollaries of armed conflict. I, like everyone else, left the war memorials with an overwhelming feeling of “what a waste of life and suffering”. We don’t face the truths of war often when we are in the lucky countries. But to reduce the likelihood of future generations of politicians “resolving” international conflicts with war, I think we should. This can start in the classroom - students should read the stories of war and see the photos, no matter how uncomfortable. The horrors of war (and the scale of suffering) is hard to grasp otherwise. This could push the future generations to find new methods of conflict resolution when they come into positions of power.
