shift to non car transportation defaults

Cars are an inefficient means of transportation for medium/high density urban communities. Their costs are numerous- with regards to land, requiring wide roads and enormous parking land to sit predominantly empty. Fiscally, they divert capital and upkeep investment, generating costly traffic due to their slow acceleration and poor visibility. Environmentally, cars are a disaster, excluding the obvious C02 emissions and materials cost, their carbon monoxide production contributes to morbidity and mortality in communities where they predominate. There are numerous better ways - walking, bikes, ebikes, scooters, mopeds, electric microcars are all vastly more effective and carry substantial wider benefits. However in Australian society these are second fiddle by design. Somehow, the negative externalities of the car industry have been washed away in public discourse. Bike lanes are severely underinvested in relative to roads, inconsistent and second privy to car parks and bus lanes. Alternative transports should be incentivised not punished, designing our roads for efficient transports first and cars second. This only really applicable to medium/high density areas - cars and trucks are necessary for lower density and rural areas. Build transport for everyone, not cars!
