Sugar tax

It's time for governments to acknowledge their role in addressing the obesity epidemic. Emerging from hunter-gatherers, we are naturally inclined to opt for more calorie-dense foods. Hence these foods are heavily marketed by companies, causing us to consume even more of them. This feedback loop is responsible for the huge increase in obesity (28% of the UK population is clinically obese, in the 1950s less than 1% were). The machine of supply-and-demand feeds these feedback loops and reinforces bad habits if left unregulated. Government intervention to rebalance financial incentives in this food system/market, by taxing sugar in processed foods, is the best way to change the scales.
