Who is to say what AI might do?
It would be good to know if this scenario is, or might one day, be possible:
A computer virus with AI capabilities. It can reproduce by disseminating copies of itself across the internet, and those copies can be 'mutated' (different to their parent) if the AI is clever enough to write its own code. At this point, the forces of evolution can take over. The computer virus inhabits an ecological niche - the address space of a computer attached to the internet- and it becomes engaged in a lifer or death struggle with anti-virus software, thereby evolving a drive to spread across computers while evading and outwitting the antivirus.
If it is possible- and I invite comments on whether it is - then my idea for next week will be that we should all ensure that we have a back-up plan to survive without the internet or any of its benefits.
