My local council has recently given out household green waste bins. Our community was really excited about this! I've been disappointed, though, that we aren't able to use compostable bags, so the scraps have to go in loose. It got gross very quickly! Apparently this is common and the reason is that when the waste is being treated, it's unclear if plastic bags are compostable or not. To get around this issue, councils should provide compostable bin bags - at a price if required, although not ideal - that are easily identifiable by their colour. Then there is no ambiguity, and the whole process will be much less smelly! This would probably encourage more of the community to get around the service too.
