The latest information ( Time magazine 6 March 2023) is that nearly nearly half of AI researchers believe artificial intelligence has a 10% or higher chance of spelling the end for humankind. This might be an acceptable risk for an individual, who is deciding, say, whether to abseil down a rocky cliff face. But it is completely unacceptable that the world watches on while probably less than 10,000 AI software engineers do their thing - try to maximize money making opportunities for their bosses - while putting us all at risk. I would say the world needs urgent controls on this - just on a risk basis.
