Biofuels and deforestation

There is a massive flaw in the EU's plan to reach net-zero, stemming from the assumption that converting land to energy use has no cost. The EU aims to store more carbon in forests and to restore biodiversity, but also to increase bioenergy use. To achieve these bioenergy goals, 1/5 of the EUs cropland would have to be converted to energy crops. Reducing reliance on biofuels will free up millions of hectares of land for growing carbon-storing forests and restoring biodiversity.
