Food initiatives in schools. Increased attendance and attention = a higher functioning society.

Education is key to a functioning society. Poor engagement at school often leads to poorer outcomes in life, including unemployment, poverty, and social exclusion. Investing in measures that get kids to school is therefore worthwhile for any government. In Australia this week, it was reported that a regional Victorian school began providing breakfast, lunch, and morning and afternoon tea for the whole school, every day. The immediate rewards from the program included increased attendance, improved behaviour, and happier and more attentive students. The school reported a decrease in suspensions per year from 120 down to only 10. This is one of many examples of positive outcomes for students from such initiatives. This should be commonplace in all schools around world. Costly, maybe - but the children of our society are worth investing in. They will pay it back in the long run.
