Following Wales

No, not Whales. If you follow them you could drown. No, you see, there is a statute in Wales, the country*, called The Well-being of Future Generations Act. The legislation was enacted in 2015 and requires public bodies in Wales to think about the long-term impact of their decisions before taking an action. In particular, to consider the impact of any actions on persistent problems such as poverty, health inequalities and climate change. 'So what?', you might think. Well, it offers a way for politicians and bureaucrats, who are otherwise necessarily focussed on short term fixes, to make a long-lasting, positive laws for the benefit of current and future generations. Whereas their job used to depend only on instant results, their job now requires them to consider long term results, and their action will be judged on that criteria, as well. The Act is unique to Wales, but it is now attracting interest from countries across the world. This idea is therefore that all countries around the world should know about it, and study the Wales example, and see how it is working. Why not? The Well-being of Future Generations Act has been going for a few years now. So, other countries might as well speak to Wales government officials and see how it is going. You don't need to fly there for a junket to ask. Just a video chat will do. Other countries could even treat it like a pilot for their own legislation - analyse it, think about it, and, if it seems to be working even a bit, take the best bits out of it, and try something similar. We all need to be prepared to learn from others. We don't all have to reinvent the wheel. Salute Wales. *some people think Wales is not a country. I wasn't even sure, and I posted this idea. Anyway, it is a country. In fact, in 2008 the Welsh Government issued a statement on this very issue: "Wales is not a principality. Although we are joined with England by land, and we are part of Great Britain, Wales is a country in its own right."
