Does the cost of public transport disincentivise it?

I normally drive to work, but caught the train and bus instead the other day, thinking it might become the new normal (it used to be the normal, but stopped during covid). It cost almost $9 there and back. My car is ~ $70 to fill up with fuel about every 2 weeks. Catching PT to work would be about $90 every 2 weeks. I wonder if there is a large market of people with cars that choose the driving option > PT because it is genuinely just cheaper (obviously there’s the cost of maintenance, but if you already have a car, these costs exist anyway). My idea is that we encourage more people to catch PT by lowering the cost. Or, I ask you as readers of this idea, are there other ways we can push to get people catching PT again?
