Nobody likes regulation. But there are a million reasons to regulate the fishing industry, not least that if we do not, then world fish stocks will be decimated. As long as regulation is necessary, why not make it good regulation? Small fishing operations support families living traditional lifestyles, and their communities. Small fishing operations are known to kill less by-catch than super trawlers. Yet it is small fishing operations going broke around the world, due to quotas. There is no global government to make regulation that would give preference to small fishers. But every country could make a point of looking out for its little fishing families and communities first, and the super trawlers second.
