Afghanistan right now is exposing the hole in global governance at the very top. Where is the international response? The UN has no teeth. The days of for leaving global responses to the USA, NATO or to Russia or to the Red Cross are over. The time to work together to create a global institution at the very top that has teeth to act in a situation like Afghanistan is right now. Such a body could still respect sovereignty of nations and all countries' different political systems, but it must also have the authority of all nations to step in where required to protect the most basic of human rights - the right not to be killed or tortured by other people. Any one of us could be a future victim of our failure to organize ourselves in this way.
